Cloud capabilities are a must for business owners on the go. Xero has a strong reputation in the industry.
Expensive to adopt if just starting out. May not make since for sole practitioner or client with fewer than 5 employees.
Business owners need to report financial information to accountant/tax preparer. There are great rewards for applications that are based in the cloud.
We are a SME with 10 admin staff using it on a daily basis. Live bank feeds for daily reconciliation, uploading credit card expenses, attaching documents to relevant transactions are all very helpful for us. It would suit small business best I think where whoever is using the system - sales/bookkeeping/accounts payable need access to all aspects of the software - bank balances, reports, expenses. Payroll is simple, Account watch list on the dashboard is helpful to track any incorrectly coded transactions, Connects with most other software - ie inventory, payroll or job software pretty easily and seamlessly. Customer support is quick. Implentation was simple and easy
We do our purchasing through Xero and we cannot attached PDF to purchase orders. And as there is 10 of us using it - staff either have hardly any access or all access (ie if you want access to accounts receivable reports for debt collection - you will also have access to bank balances). Accounts payable - you can only pay 200 bills in one ABA - which is not helpful for EOM payments as wehave to do EOM in 2 ABA batches. Cannot upload docs in payroll centre to emoloyee cards, such as doctors notes for sick leave.

A very easy accounting tool to use and being able to link to multiple bank accounts means reconciling purchases is even easier to keep track of.
The reporting functionality could do with improvements. A scheduled reporting tool would be really helpful that enabled teh running and downloading of regularly used reports.

The new look in bills, you should be able to move columns so the first column you see is reference number not supplier's name. Also you should be able to hide unwanted TABS ie Planned Date. It was much easier to read when contact was smaller and in blue. With the new updates it seems the layout and look is going backward instead of forwards. Not looking forward to new invoices in sales look.
Would like to be able to sort columns in a different order, REFERENCE NEEDS TO BE FIRST TAB.

The Xero provide an excellent feature for handling the most challenging task for the business, i.e. accounting and handling cash in and out, outstanding and overdue bill.
Xero has provided a lot of great features to handle accounting, but Xero has no phone call support, and it has very few limits on the early plan, i.e. up to 20 invoices.
Xero has helped solve many significant business problems by providing many features under one roof, such as accounting, invoicing, payroll, and accepting payments.
Xero is very easy to use. Even if you aren't particularly technologically savvy or financially inclined, you will be able to use Xero to meet your needs. Creating and collecting invoices is really easy.
Sometimes I find I have to click around some to find what I am looking for. (But that might just be me). Perhaps a more visual dashboard will help those of us who need it.
Xero solves our complex bookkeeping needs. We keep not only our own books but those of clients as well. Through their partnership program, we can pass along savings to our clients that they would not have had otherwise. We can also manage all client finances from one centralized place.
Xero has some great rules around processing and has many additional options that could allow it to be an ERP for smaller companies.

Xero is 100% cloud-based and is built for the cloud. Access is easy and I comfortably work with my CPA remotely.
It's not as easy for non-accountants to use. I have worked with other products that are more user-friendly in categorizing transactions and producing reports.

I like the way the software has designed things to fasten the accounting activites. Xero makes bank reconciliations pretty easy and saves a lot of time with the 'Cash coding' feature and bank rules which can be created within the software. I also like the 'Create bill from email' feature, through which it creates bills while filling in a several details automatically. Also, sending invoices and statements directly to the customers through the system is very useful. The 'Repeating journal entry' feature is also very helpful.
There is nothing big to complain about. However, when accounting for a large parent company that has several subsidiaries, the users have to shift from one entity to another to view transactions in each entity and it is a bit difficult to compare the performances of the subsidiaries parallelly.
Xero has helped to reduce the time taken to perform accounting activities. It has fastened the bank reconciliation process and invoices and bills creation. Also, payment files created through batch payments make it easy to pay several suppliers at once while saving a lot of time. Their pre-built reports help to quickly prepare the reports management needs, without worrying about the formatting of the report. The formatting of the reoprts are pretty good and it even allows to customze the reports to a certain extend.
Xero has a great UI, and it is easy to move around the program and get the reports you need. Simple UI helps you work faster and wiser and makes for better use your time and resources.
The only thing I would disklike is sometimes the integrations with other software can be tricky or hard to see if they are working right. Other than that, I am happy with the software.
I am moving all our bookkeeping to the U.S. and using Xero to start-up and facilitate all our US bookkeeping. I have realized it is easy to use and runs a great number of reports.

It is easy to email quotes/invoices etc, and to the chain to turn quote to invoices and purchase orders. Also our accountant links directly in so they are happy too. Very easy GST returns including tracking adjustments since last return.
The user roles are too inflexible. We have sales/inventory reports we would like staff to access, but we can't give them access without giving them accounts access, so we have to call off these reports for them. This is a major flaw and we'd love to see Xero change this. While we recognise it's an accounts package firs, not an inventory tool, it feels a natural request to have more individualised user role functions to allow for this type of thing. This is further exacerbated by the fact that Sales staff can only see the last 30 transactions for an inventory item. If they could change to see further back this would also be very helpful as wouldn't need to access the inventory reports as often for this info.
Remote access from anywhere we happen to be, and time saved moving from quote to invoice to purchase order and supplier invoice by carrying all data across from the first event.

Xero is a very useful accounting package for small businesses to manage their day to day financial transactions. It is a very intuitive product which does not require extensive accounting knowledge. The product is very reasonably priced and is very good value for money. Overall I would recomment Xero to any small businesses over the other products available.
As Xero is a simple program it is not useful for any transactions slightly more complex than normal. It is also somewhat difficult to build custom reports however the standard reports are useful nonetheless. Generally we export our Xero reports into Excel to present for our Board reports etc.
Simplistic financial reporting that all relevant parties can understand. Our staff who are not financially focussed can use the platform for inputting purchase orders and invoices which saves a lot of time for the finance team.
For the most part, it integrates nicely with a lot of other systems (banking, credit cards, payroll, etc.). It also allows for payments directly via Stripe. The accounting software itself is pretty easy to use as well.
The reporting isn't great. A lot of times there is quite a bit of manual manipulation needed to show comparative reports, Year-To-Date info and other reports.
It handles a lot of integrations so manual entry is limited. This saves a lot of time and headaches. Additionally, you can customize reports how you want them (for the most part) and, once saved, they are easy to reproduce.
